Hello! Welcome to my little corner and thanks for visiting. My name is Lina Liwag. I live in Toronto with my husband Angel and our 18-year old son Austin. Freshncrunchy is what goes on in our kitchen and is a family project: I make the food, Angel takes the photos and Austin loves to sample the goodies!
I help create mortgages for a living (you can check me here). This has been so for almost 20 years now. Then about 5 years ago as I reached mid-life, holistic health became an exciting path to take...spurred by my own health challenges and healing journey.
So I've been slowly learning and transitioning. In September 2013, I graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition as a holistic health coach.
I am also a Chef in Raw Cuisine. I have completed my training and has been certified through the Matthew Kenney Culinary Academy in California. I attended their Level One course onsite in March 2014. In 2015, I continued my training further (online) taking their courses in Plant-based Desserts and Level Two, Advanced Raw Cuisine.
I'm continually learning that no particular diet is one size fits all and that each person is unique with his own bio-individuality. One person’s food may not be good for another. However, I think we can all agree that as we start eating whole foods, we will eventually be able to let go and replace those highly processed, nutrient-deficient options and be much healthier as a result.
I grew up in the Philippines but moved to Canada in the late 80’s. Like most working women, I only have few precious hours left to fix dinner for my family, to spend time with them and to prepare for the next day.
I call it the hormonal shift: major digestion problems, food sensitivities, chronic fatigue and a myriad of other issues. These all started as I was turning 49. I was a little confused since I thought I was healthy and fit. It took me a while to figure out what was going on as I wasn’t initially getting the right answers from traditional medicine (it’s when all your tests come out great but you know you don’t really feel well).
I had to search for a better way to heal. With the help of a naturopath and a Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner, I have found a new sense of energy and wellness. I'm so thankful for the help that I had received from these two different healing modalities. All of these have inspired me to read as much as I can about holistic health. And as a result, I found a new passion - making healthy meals - ones that can sustain my family’s health and hopefully the health of others!
The recipes here are plant based options and hopefully they can be incorporated in many family dinner tables. I think these are often forgotten or shall I say not given much thought of as to some of us, “they are just side dishes” and not the main players in our day to day meals. " From our plate to yours," I hope you can at least try a recipe or two. You can also visit my Instagram page here or Pinterest on this link where I regularly post iPhone pics of food that sometimes may not make it to the blog.
